REUTERS/Mike Segar/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLOS ANGELES, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Negotiators for striking Hollywood actors resumed contract talks on Monday with representatives of major studios, television networks and streaming services, marking the first time the two sides have returned to the bargaining table since mid-July. In the area of artificial intelligence, actors want to protect their images and work from being replaced by computer-generated "digital replicas." The resumption of contract talks between the actors and studios also coincided with network television's late-night hosts - Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers and Jimmy Kimmel - bringing their shows back to television on Monday.

CNN —The US government aims to restore sweeping regulations for high-speed internet providers, such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, reviving “net neutrality” rules for the broadband industry – and an ongoing debate about the internet’s future. The rules would ban internet service providers (ISPs) from blocking or slowing down access to websites and online content, the people told CNN. A net neutrality reduxNet neutrality rules are more necessary than ever, Rosenworcel is expected to say in her speech, after millions of Americans discovered the vital importance of reliable internet access during the Covid-19 pandemic. CNN —Jimmy Kimmel was ready to throw in the towel as the host of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” but it seems the host has had a change of heart. “I was very intent on retiring right around the time where the strike started,” Kimmel said Wednesday on the debut episode of his new Spotify podcast “Strike Force Five,” which he hosts with fellow network TV late-night show personalities Seth Meyers, John Oliver, Jimmy Fallon and Stephen Colbert. “Now I realize, oh yeah, it’s kind of nice to work,” Kimmel added. In 2022, ABC announced that Kimmel signed a three-year contract extension to stay on as host and executive producer of “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” so regardless of his itch to retire, he’s under contract until 2025. As a result, the late-night shows – which rely on writers for monologues and comedy bits – all went dark in May.

Why a Tiny Trough Garden Always Attracts an Audience

These diminutive stars can be seen spilling out of pockets in a 35-foot-long rock retaining wall, in the gravel bed above it and, of course, in troughs and more troughs. Selling tiny plants may not be the mainstay of the business, “but it’s one cachet cow,” Ms. Chips joked. The nursery, in a bucolic setting that feels like an old garden, attracts a clientele that includes beginning gardeners and connoisseurs who come for the carefully curated selection and the depth of staff expertise. Ms. Spingarn built and planted the rock wall in the 1970s. The two were longtime employees of the previous owner, Mr. Duguid said, and aim to continue the nursery’s traditions.

CNN —After staging a widespread blackout to protest Reddit’s plans for a controversial new pricing policy, some users are now trying a different tactic: flooding the social network with John Oliver pictures. There have been numerous pictures of Oliver posing in sharply tailored suits, and screenshots of humorous moments from his show. And an AI-generated image of Oliver as a “Game of Thrones” character (“John Oliver Snow”). More than 2,500 communities on Reddit remain blacked out nearly two weeks into the protest. Over the past week, many Reddit users have expressed hopes that Oliver might air a future segment about suddenly becoming the face of the revolt, and perhaps feature their content on his show.

The fallout from the writers’ strike is beginning to hit. Late night shows, including “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” will immediately begin showing repeats, according to several people briefed on the plans. The Comedy Central program “The Daily Show,” which has no dedicated host, will also air repeats, as will the HBO shows hosted by John Oliver and Bill Maher. The writers have said that their compensation has stagnated even as television production has rapidly grown over the past decade. leaders have said the current system is broken, arguing that the “the survival of writing as a profession is at stake in this negotiation.”
REUTERS/Alyssa PointerLOS ANGELES, May 1 (Reuters) - Negotiators for Hollywood writers and film and television studios engaged in 11th-hour contract talks on Monday to try and avert a strike that would disrupt TV production across an industry grappling with seismic changes. The Writers Guild of America could call a work stoppage as early as Tuesday if it cannot reach a deal with companies such as Walt Disney Co (DIS.N) and Netflix Inc (NFLX.O). Writers say they have suffered financially during the streaming TV boom, in part due to shorter seasons and smaller residual payments. Half of TV series writers now work at minimum salary levels, compared with one-third in the 2013-14 season, according to Guild statistics. The WGA wants safeguards to prevent studios from using AI to generate new scripts from writers' previous work.

Factbox: Why are Hollywood writers threatening to strike?
  + stars: | 2023-05-01 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LOS ANGELES, May 1 (Reuters) - Hollywood writers and the film and television studios are racing to agree to a new contract to replace the one that expires at 11:59 p.m. Pacific time Monday. Why is the Writers Guild of America threatening a strike? The writers argue that they have been negatively impacted by streaming, saying they are working more for less money. They're seeking better compensation for their work on film, television and streaming shows, and residual payments that reward writers when a show becomes a hit. Striking writers are prohibited from doing work on any television or film project.
In 2013, Oxford economist Carl Benedikt Frey estimated that nearly half of all US jobs could be replaced by AI. So rather than having your job "outright replaced," Frey says, ChatGPT's adoption may ultimately result in a different outcome — being replaced by another human. That said, he believes the study's estimates regarding potential AI job replacement are still "broadly on target." "We may be more focusing on generating the right ideas, asking the right questions, things that are more interesting." That's because there are arguably some things ChatGPT can't learn from scouring data from millions of websites.

He says that while being a comedy writer helps him make light of it, the system could be better. Being an immigrant comedy writer or comedian is so absurd. I recently got married to an American comedy writer, and she writes for "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver." Applying to be a late-night writer is a pretty secretive processMost late-night shows will invite you to submit a sample. That spun up "The Colbert Report," and then all the other late-night shows after that always had an opinion on politics.
The U.S. House’s Jan. 6 committee has performed its task with a dignity that verges on parody. They are doing criminal referrals while Rome burns. I think the criminal referrals are completely appropriate and, if anything, fail to capture the true scope of his malfeasance. He said as much himself in response to the Jan. 6 committee referral. One of the strongest grounds for prosecuting Trump for Jan. 6 is that only accountability will prevent something like it from happening again.
